Addicted to Zombies

Dear Diary,

Since 28 Days Later, I’ve been gobbling up anything related to Zombies… Movies, TV Shows, Books, Comics…

I definitely, don’t believe that the dead will come back to life as soulless creatures hungry for flesh and blood. I believe in heaven and hell. And even with my addiction to this genre, that has not in any way changed my belief that everyone dies. And people wake up either in heaven or in hell…

However, I am open to the idea of a virus that will infect mankind that will make them zombie like while they are still alive…. Just like the plot for 28 Days Later.

That is definitely possible in my mind. There’s just too many people out there with warped ideas that could eventually wipe us all out…

But anyway, even if that happens soon, in the near future or never, I have a peace of mind that I know where I’ll end up anyway.

Which is why I can read these zombie books and not turn into a paranoid, zombie-proof-my-house, nutball…

I really just find that I like reading how people cope with situations that seem really hopeless… How in most books, there’s always a hero who has been through the loss of someone they love, but still find a way to survive. A hero who may not always act like one… And of course I like the thrill of the zombie encounters and how they get out of it alive or not… I read Dean Koontz and Stephen King books… So you can kind of imagine why I like the macabre stories…

It’s like reading a book and you feel good that your favorite character is still alive. But alive in a world that is not a place you would like to still be alive in… Where the happy ending leaves you with a feeling of sadness.  I honestly would not know how I’d fare in a zombie world. I’d probably get killed really fast because:
1. The only sport I’m good at is Ping Pong… And well, I don’t think I’d be able to kill a zombie with a table tennis paddle…
2. The only weapon I know how to wield is using my PS3 controller to get multiple combos with my characters weapon…

Anyway,  for those who are zombie addicts like me here are a few things that I’ve seen and read (Note: I only recommend a few on the list, mostly the first ones listed… hehe):

28 Days Later, 28 Weeks Later, Dawn of the Dead (and the other remakes), Quarantine, Resident Evil (and the other sequels), Shaun of the Dead, Zombieland, World War Z, Warm Bodies, REC, Quarantine 2, The Cabin in the Woods, Evil Dead

Have I mentioned that I’m obsessed with Doctor Who?  For those who haven’t watched it yet, nothing to see here… Move on to other entries… 😛  This is Rose and the 10th Doctor’s first kiss.  Okay, technically, she’s possessed by another person.

I wish I could just pause this moment forever. 🙂

Cassandra (in Rose’s body): [unaware Cassandra is inhabiting Rose’s body; the Doctor questioned the nurses’ secrecy on their miracle medicine] I can’t Adam and Eve it.

The Doctor: What… What’s with the voice?

Cassandra (in Rose’s body): Oh, I don’t know, just larking about. New Earth. New me.

The Doctor: Well, I can talk. New new Doctor.

Cassandra (in Rose’s body): Mmm, aren’t you just?

[kisses The Doctor playfully; breathing somewhat heavily]

Cassandra (in Rose’s body): T-ter-terminal’s this way.

[walks away, fanning her face as if warm]

The Doctor: [looks at her, disoriented; finally, in squeaky voice] Yep. Still got it.

Doctor Who Obsession

Dear Diary,

A long time ago, when my high school me still existed, I realized I loved science fiction when I got addicted to the X-Files.  Imagine a 14-year-old me trying to defend myself to my classmates for having a crush on David Duchovny (who was around his mid thirties then) while their crush on The Moffats and the Hanson brothers were perfectly normal…

When I say addicted, I really mean addicted as in I-need-rehab-in-order-to-stop-watching kind of addicted, the internet was still dial-up back then and storage was still the floppy disk, so I didn’t have google and a folder full of pictures of them like I do now.  I had a good ol’ scrapbook.  I hunted magazines that featured them and cut up the covers.  My brother teased me about it, wondering why I go to such lengths to collect such things.  I also joined the Official X-Files fan club and I sent them fan mail via the post office.  Of course they replied by giving me a picture with their autographs. (fan girl’s happiest moments…)

But sadly, the show ended after 9 years.  And so I was left with a gap in my heart for a good sci-fi show.  For a time, I filled the gap with other sci-fi shows, but it just didn’t put a spark in me like X-Files did.

Then this year, I finally decided to watch this show I kept seeing my fellow sci-fi lovers keep mentioning.  This year I finally met Doctor Who and finally my spark is back.

Doctor Who is a British television show about a Time Lord who travels through space and time, saving the world, other planets, other species and most of all saving humanity.  It started airing since the 1960’s and then paused around 1989.  Restarted in 1996 as a TV/Movie series.  Paused again. And finally made a comeback in 2005 until present.   I started with the 2005 series until present.  Getting hold of the old seasons is kind of hard.

This show is about to hit its 50th Anniversary.  The series allows the Doctor to live on for this long because he can regenerate.  Before he dies completely, he heals himself but regenerates into a completely new body with new personality as well.  My favorite Doctor is the 10th, played by David Tennant.  In my opinion, he plays it so well, I wish he could have played it forever.

It’s not completely like X-Files, but it’s got similar elements.  Doctor Who is technically an alien after all and X-Files is all about extraterrestrials with a mix of monsters from your worst nightmare.  It’s similar because it plays with your imagination and leaves you with lots of feelings.  Although, I think Doctor Who also targets younger audiences, while X-Files is not something I’d let my future kids watch…

It kind of makes sense that I would like the 1st and 2nd greatest sci-fi tv shows ever.

So now, I’m trying to get my hands on Doctor Who stuff to add to my collection.  So far, I’ve been scouting Booksale branches and have gotten the Doctor Who Annuals.  I’m gonna need a sonic screwdriver soon, so I won’t die of jealousy every time a fellow whovian (yes, that’s what Doctor Who fans are called) posts about their sonic screwdriver in the Whovian Philippines FB page.  And of course, my fanaticism is not complete unless I am able to wear a Doctor Who related costume on one of my family’s costumed holiday get-together…  (Last time I went as Agent Scully… )

Love lots,

Dear Diary,

I’m a big fan of Chuck (TV Series 2007 – 2012).  Yvonne Strahovski plays the leading lady and kicks ass in the show!  She recently played a recurring part in Dexter Season 7 (which I also love watching).

Lo and behold, as I was browsing her filmography in IMDB.COM, I saw that she also voiced Aya Brea in the game The 3rd Birthday.

I got addicted to Parasite Eve since it first came out with the Playstation One.  I was so happy when I found that there was a 3rd sequel for the PSP.  And the surprise was that all that time that I was playing it, it was actually Yvonne that I was hearing… Now that I listen back to all the cutscene, I can now imagine that it was Yvonne behind the scenes…

Click the link below to watch Yvonne’s interview about voicing Aya Brea:

*** SPOILERS ***

Do not click on the next link if you have not played The 3rd Birthday and wish to play it in the future, because the link shows cut scenes from the game…

So, yeah. I’m a fan!
